Loss adjuster

A loss adjuster is a professional appointed by an insurer to investigate an accident, verify documents and assess how much a claim is worth before the insurer decides what to offer.

Adjusters review the police report, inspect vehicles, check medical records and sometimes speak to witnesses. They work for the insurer that appointed them. Their findings shape the insurer’s opening position, but their view of fault or value is not final.

The adjuster does not act for you. Keep copies of every document you hand over, and know your injuries and losses before you answer their questions.

How insurers and adjusters handle a claim explains what to expect from this stage. If an adjuster is pressing you, an independent lawyer can deal with them for you.
