What a personal injury lawyer does
You are hurt after a road accident and wondering whether a lawyer can actually help.
A personal injury lawyer handles the legal side of a road accident claim so an injured person is not negotiating alone against an insurer’s adjuster. In a road accident claim, that usually means building the evidence, valuing the loss correctly, and either settling or filing suit.
What the work looks like
Most of a personal injury lawyer’s work happens before any hearing. They collect the police report, medical records and specialist reports. They also write to the insurer and press for the file to move.
When an offer arrives, they check it against the heads of loss the law recognises, not the round number the insurer proposes. If the case does reach court, most motor claims are filed in the Sessions Court, which hears them regardless of size.[3]
What a lawyer cannot promise you
Malaysian rules limit what a lawyer may say to attract clients. A lawyer may claim a specialisation only if it can be justified, and may not claim to be an expert. Publicity also may not be misleading or create unjustified expectations about results.[2]
The same applies to fees: an advocate and solicitor cannot lawfully agree to be paid only if the case wins.[1] How lawyer fees work explains what is allowed.
When a lawyer helps most
A lawyer matters most when fault is disputed, the injury is serious or lasting, the insurer’s offer looks low against your documented losses, or the other driver is uninsured. With clear fault and modest injuries, some people manage the early steps themselves first.

Questions worth asking before you engage anyone
Ask how the lawyer charges, roughly how the process will run, and how they will keep you updated. A lawyer who answers plainly, without promising an outcome, is following the rules.
How this site fits in
This is an information resource, not a law firm. It helps you understand your situation and connects you to a licensed advocate and solicitor at an independent law firm. What happens after you message us shows what that first exchange looks like.
What to send first
For the first contact, share general dates, location, case status and a short summary only. Keep documents private.
Only after an identified lawyer or law firm contacts you and specifically asks for them should you provide that identified lawyer or firm with the accident date, where it happened, your injuries and the police report if you have one. Medical reports, scene photos and any insurer letter can follow. Missing documents do not stop you starting.

Common questions
What does a personal injury lawyer actually do on a road accident case?
They gather and test the evidence, deal with the insurer or its adjuster on your behalf, work out what your claim is really worth against the law, negotiate a settlement, and file in court if it cannot be agreed. Most of the work happens before any court date.
Can a lawyer guarantee how much I will receive?
No. Compensation depends on your specific injuries, evidence and the facts of the accident, and Malaysian rules do not allow a lawyer to quote a guaranteed figure or advertise how often they win. Anyone who does should be treated with caution.
Is it true a lawyer cannot charge only if you win in Malaysia?
Correct. The law prohibits an advocate and solicitor from agreeing to be paid only if a lawsuit succeeds.[1] Fee arrangements still vary, so it is worth understanding how a particular lawyer charges before you engage them.
How is this site different from a law firm?
This is an information resource, not a law firm, and it connects injured people to a licensed advocate and solicitor for advice on their specific case. It does not itself represent you or charge you a fee.
