Statutory declaration

A statutory declaration, known locally as an akuan berkanun, is a written statement a person signs and swears before a commissioner for oaths, confirming that its contents are true.

In a road accident claim it is often used to explain a delay, such as a police report made after the usual reporting window, or to set out facts where no other document exists. It is sworn, so false information can carry legal consequences.

It can support a claim. It does not replace a police report, medical report or witness statement.

Explaining a late police report shows how it is used in practice. An independent lawyer can help draft one for your claim.
